The True Commission of Jesus; Are Christian’s Fulfilling it? - Part 1
by Russell J. Schmidt
Let me preface this article by saying, it is not my intention with this article to condemn any one Christian or Christian group, or to devalue the hard work that some Christians perform in the name of Christianity; there are some issues, such as anti-abortion that are worthy causes and that I fully support.
With that said, I often wonder if Christians or Christian groups who get involved with certain political issues, if they realize that they are just spinning their wheels for a cause that is really meaningless in the big picture in God’s overall plan for mankind.
The prophecies of the Bible are clear and precise about the way society is going to go; and that’s toward the perverseness and evil of this worlds way. It clearly has gone in that direction and will continue until it all culminates in the return of Jesus Christ. To try and fight this by standing up and lobbying in the Washington or any other political arena, is in my opinion, useless for many of these issues.
I often wonder if, by doing this, are we fighting against what is ultimately going to come to pass. Are we fighting God’s will? The issues that many Christians are fighting against, may very well be issues that God has allowed to happen, so as to teach mankind lessons that teach them how badly they need God. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they are from God, but God is allowing man to recognize that his lifestyle is not going to produce true success and true happiness.
Yet, Christians are fighting against them, with good intentions, of course. Why do we fight against them? Because with our limited intelligence, we only see the negative that can come from those situations in the physical realm; How they have an adverse effect on our societies. God, may very well see past that which we can see, and see the good that will be the ultimate result of going through the process. That would be man seeing that Jesus is the only answer to true happiness.
Ironically, the more people we talk to and turn to God, the more we will be helping to fight against the issues that I am talking about. The more people who have Jesus in their hearts, the more that will recognize that this societies way is a far cry from what it should be and by default, those issues may not have as much secular support. This will still be irrelevant in the long run, because there are always going to be more unsaved than saved people.
We know for fact, that society is going to go in the direction we are fighting against anyway, so why fight it? Jesus said Himself, in Matthew 24:37, “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” How bad was society in the days of Noah? Well, when we look back at Genesis chapter 7, we see that man was so corrupt that God wanted to destroy man. And man was so wrapped up in his evil ways that he had no idea of the tragedy that was about to befall them, even though, according to other texts, Noah and Methuselah went about warning people of the coming flood.
Today, it is similar to those days. Many Christians are warning people of the return of Jesus Christ, and to be ready for His return. But, rather than turning from their evil ways and seeking God and preparing themselves for Jesus’ return, they are just brushing it off as nonsense.
Even though multitudes of people aren’t listening, there are many who are listening and are heeding the warning and turning to Jesus to save them; and that’s what Jesus wants from us. He wants you and me to warn people and to tell them about Him and use the example of what Jesus has done in our own lives to help them see what Jesus can do for theirs.
Everyone needs Jesus, but not everyone realizes it and is going to accept Him. Our job is to open that door to Jesus and the Holy Spirit by telling people about Him, and let Jesus do the rest. We can’t make people turn, only Jesus can. But, we can start the process. There is a void in everyone’s life that needs to be filled with Jesus, so you would be surprised at how many people will be receptive to what you have to say.
Even people whom you would least expect to be receptive, may surprise you and listen. It’s not up to you to pick and choose who to tell the Good News using your own human intuition. Everyone wants and needs to hear the Good News of the Gospel, but for most, they do not know it. God may lead you to someone who may not have been receptive before, but may be going through something in their lives which has opened up the door for them to listen.
Most Christians will agree that time is running out; and this is biblical. The world is quickly spiraling toward the prophecies described in the Bible. Rather than fight them, we as Christians should be seeking to save as many people as we can. Why? Because that’s what Jesus told us to do. Don’t waste valuable time and money on fighting issues that are totally out of our control in the first place. We should be spending that time and money on saving lost people; and there are many, many of them out there that are just waiting for you to talk with them.
We should always follow Jesus’ example. He didn’t fight social issues, and there were many of them in that day; He only went to save people. Next time, I will delve a little deeper into this issue by seeing what Scripture has to say about what our role should be in our service to Jesus.
