Commentary on Creation: Intelligent Design vs. Science
by Russell J. Schmidt
We’ve all heard the arguments— both sides of the story. The believers of intelligent design, who say that a supernatural God created all that exists in accordance to the biblical version. Believers will say to unbelievers things such as, “It takes more faith to believe in creation without God, than to believe in a creation with God.”
Then you have the unbelievers, who believe in such theories as the Big Bang, Evolution, Natural Selection etc... They will point to archaeology and carbon testing methods that determines age of something, to refute what the Bible claims is the beginning of time. They say all these things points in the direction of a self-created, self-sustaining universe.
Can both sides be right? Is it possible to get to the heart of the issue and form an understanding, that is more than just a theory? What is a theory anyway? Well, the definition of “theory”, is the belief about something, based on speculation and conjecture. Wow! A theory doesn’t sound to stable now, does it?. When you look up “speculation”, the definition is, a reasoning based on incomplete facts or information. Conjecture means the same thing.
So, if a theory is based on two things that are incomplete facts or information, how in the world can you take the theories that secular science promotes as fact; unless you put God behind it all, and add to the mixture, faith? Think about it! Science supposedly has some of the greatest minds in the world, working together and the theories they come up with cannot and will not be proved by them. Yet, many in the science community refused to accept the possibility that there is a greater and more intelligent power out there who created and maintains all that we can see.
Now, the fact that they can only come up with theories is fine, because the Bible tells us that man cannot comprehend the mind of God. But, when they put those theories in text books to teach to our children in schools that they are fact, although they are just theories, is incompetent at best.
I don’t remember ever being told that there is another side of the story in public school that says, there is the possibility that there is an intelligent designer who created life as we know it and who may have been responsible for the theories that science claims, if they are fact. By not going into as much detail on that side of the story, tells me that they (secular society, meaning those not believing in religious or spiritual matters) don’t want you to believe anything but their theories.
These so-called greatest minds in the world, are not so great after-all. The Bible talks much about the knowledge of God and how it is a blessing to one who accepts it. But, it also talks of the knowledge of man, that does not accept the knowledge of God. Job 15:2, says, “Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?” Isaiah 44:25, talks of the foolish knowledge of man, “Who turns wise men backward, And makes their knowledge foolishness.” The adjective “their”, is referring to man who is separated from God by their lack of godly knowledge.
In Isaiah 47:10, we get more on the emptiness of man’s knowledge, where they are told, “Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you.” Man has been warped into believing something that is not credible, based on conjecture or speculation. You certainly couldn’t convict someone in a court of law with evidence based on conjecture or speculation, so why isn’t this same principle applied to these theories about creation and it’s development. Or at the very least, mention the possibility that there could be a God who is in charge of these theories.
When you study all the scientific theories such as the big bang, quantum mechanics, theory of relativity, and so on, not one of them is cause for discrediting God. In my view, the intricacy of the aspects of these theories support the case for God. Many scientists do not understate the commonality between the big bang theory and the Bibles version of creation.
As far as tying such theories together, for example, gravity with the theory of quantum mechanics, this is called the string theory. The string theory or M-theory, as it is also called, is one that hopes to tie together both quantum mechanics and gravity, to help them look back further into time. But, one excerpt
from an article at www.nature.com, I found interesting in reference to tying together both gravity and quantum mechanics says, “But to derive the properties of the world in which we live, theorists need to make assumptions about various parameters. Originally, string theorists hoped string theory would dictate these parameters. But this is looking increasingly unlikely. It is far more probable that there aren't enough rules to predict all the parameters of our world.”
When they do make those assumptions, what are they going to be based on? They are going to base it on a guess! It’s like pulling them out of thin air randomly. It will have no basis at all, instead of leaving it open and admitting that it is beyond their comprehension and leave it in the hands of the idea that there is a more intelligent creator who is responsible. They will continue to deny that and come up with more theories.
This brings to mind Ecclesiastes 8:17, “then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning. Even if a wise man claims he knows, he cannot really comprehend it.” Wow! Does that describe the problems of science? And that was written thousands of years ago and it still holds true, even with all the advances in science and technology.
We are not designed to comprehend all that God is and what He has done. I look at Ecclesiastes 8:17 as prophecy that is in the process of being fulfilled. Unfortunately, one will not be able to prove the prophecy until time as we know has come to an end, but I submit to you, that this prophecy WILL be fulfilled.
Even Evolution, in a limited capacity, cannot be ruled out as a work of God. But, as far as the aspect of natural selection is concerned, even science has doubts about that theory. Natural selection is Darwin’s theory that one species can evolve to a completely new or different species to adapt to changes in its environment. A total change in species is called, macro-evolution.
But, science has found that the genetic changes that would need to take place in order for macro-evolution to occur, is just not possible naturally. There is no evidence, what-so-ever, to link any one species to an earlier species. The fossil records show no link or process of evolution that may have occurred over time with any one species. Does that mean that there was no evolutionary process at all? No. Because we see signs of adaptation in our own lives, but, to suggest that a man evolved from an ape, who had originally evolved from an organism is no longer considered likely. But, also to say that God’s hand didn’t have something to do with the possibility that some sort of evolutionary process took place, is also being narrow-minded.
There must be an explanation why the Bible tells us that the beginning of time was some 6,000 years ago, yet scientists say that the universe has been in existence for about 12 to 15 billion years. Now, that’s a big discrepancy of time. If my calculations are correct, it is a difference between 11,999,994,000 to 14,999,994,000 (that’s billion) years. Again, we can chalk it up to Ecclesiastes 8:17, and say that we just cannot comprehend everything God has done.
Here is total conjecture on my part, but it is possible God was experimenting with creation and different types of beings. For example, the dinosaur age, and cavemen. Who knows what God was up to. But, what God tells us in the Bible, is all that is necessary for us to know. So, if God tells us in His word that creation began some 6,000 years ago, well that’s good enough for me. As far as God was concerned, our creation, the life that applies to us, started with Genesis chapter one. Which actual estimates take it just short of 6,000 years ago.
But, we can also say that the creation account of Genesis chapter one, does not refer to any kind of time-table or time-frame. The Bible was not intended to be a science textbook— the time factor of God’s creation was not important to us or God would have mentioned it. The Bible does tell us in 2 Peter 3:8, “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” God’s time is not our time— our time is meaningless to God, because He is infinite.
Was God here before the creation version of the Bible? He certainly was. The Bible tells us God is eternal, which means, He always was, and always will be. What He was doing, and what He was or wasn’t creating before the biblical creation account is of no concern to us and not necessary for us to know, if God doesn’t tell us. Science can try to determine it with all its theories and speculation, but they will be unable to figure it out.
There is also another possibility that is conjecture, but is talked about as another possible theory of intelligent design came about, just as the scientific theories that are out there. That is the possibility that God created things aged!
John 2:1-11
1) On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there,
2) and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3) When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4)"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5) His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6) Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7) Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8) Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so,
9) and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
10) and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11)This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
How did Jesus create wine immediately when the is a process of time that it takes for grape juice to ferment in order for it to become wine? Let alone
the fact that this was water He was dealing with. And it wasn't just a cheap wine that He created, because in verse 10, the master of the banquet tasted the wine and said,
"Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." The more expensive and better tasting the wine, the longer that the wine has fermented.
Just as Jesus created an aged wine, God may have created an aged creation.
We also have a natural fact that lava from volcanoes forms different kinds of rock in a relatively short period of time. But, from the naked eye that rock that forms from the solidifying of lava flow from a volcano, appears older than
it actually is. However God created all of creation, these theories cannot
be counted out, just like science says that their theories cannot be counted out.
The Bible tells us creation was done in seven days. I mentioned earlier the God's
timing is not our timing. But, with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26),
If God says he created everything in in seven days according to our timing, then
that's what He did! I don't despute it.
These, of course, are just theories for how intelligent design may have occurred. But, just as scientific theories are viewed as legitimate, then so too should the theories of intelligent design be considered legitimate. The one
thing we do know as Christians, that God did created everything as an intelligent
designer; how He did it is not necessarily important for us to know! Only that we
believe in faith!
