John 1:14-18…”14) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15) John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”
16) And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
17) For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18) No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”
Here is where we get absolute confirmation that the Word became Jesus, for “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father.”
Verse 16, in my estimation, is a very over-looked verse—”And of His fullness we have all received.” This verse is telling us, that whoever receives Jesus Christ and believes in Him, receives all the power and authority that Jesus displayed while dwelling among us. What do I mean by power and authority? Just as Jesus displayed and had authority over Satan and the demonic realm—upon acceptance of Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit, you also have this same power and authority of Jesus through the Holy Spirit residing in you.
There are many verses that corroborate this fact, but let’s take a look at a few, starting with John 14:12-14, Jesus said Himself, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
Jesus’ commission to His apostles in Mark 16:15-18 also confirms this, “15) And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17) And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18) they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Notice the signs that will follow those who believe in verse 17 and 18.
In 2 Peter 1:3, we read, “as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.” Ephesians 3:20, also confirms this power, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” (Bold Mine).
Sadly, for the most part, the Body of Christ today, does not receive this as truth. It has been deceived by the great deceiver, Satan, into believing that this power was for Jesus and the apostles, and was only for that time and not something that is truly available to us today.
In conclusion I would like to elaborate on a point I made above. I spoke of the three things that we should no longer take part in that are from John 1:13, they are, the physical “blood” (referring to our physical being), “the will of the flesh” (referring to running our lives without God), and “the will of man” (referring to the ways of man, which are contrary to God’s ways). I base this on the fact the John 1:13 says, we are not born of those things. That is not referring to our physical birth, because through our physical birth we were born into those things. What is referred to here, is the born-again being that we become after accepting Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit.
This being is a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17), not born of those things mentioned in John 1:13, but born of God, of the Holy Spirit. When I said you must no longer take part in those things, I am referring to not living according to those things. While in this life, we still need our physical bodies— but we must view our physical bodies as just a a vehicle
that, we as a new creation of the Spirit, live in. You can read more about your being by reading my study on Spirit, Soul, and Body.
In John chapter 3, we read of a Pharisee, Nicodemus, who was one of possibly a few Pharisees who did privately believe in Jesus, but was afraid to make his belief known to the other Jewish leaders. In chapter 3, Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, so he would not be seen, to say to Jesus in verse 2, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” The only indication here that there are other Pharisees who feel this way is that he uses the plural word “we” when speaking to Jesus, indicating that there are others who may feel as he does about Jesus.
Jesus answered him by saying, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This confused Nicodemus, because he thought of being born again in the physical sense, using only his physical five senses to try and comprehend being born again. Because he had no understanding of this sixth sense of the Holy Spirit, Nicodemus responded to Jesus by asking in verse 4, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Nicodemus tried to rationalize this by using the physical point of view, as I explained earlier, in the physical, man needs to explain things with physical facts that either prove or disprove something. If it cannot be proved this way it is considered to be false and not able to be comprehended by the physical being. Jesus responded to Nicodemus in verse 5-8, “5) Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7) Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8) The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Jesus here is clearly speaking of what I am talking about—”That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.” Nicodemus still could not understand, and Jesus went on to chastise him by saying in verse 10 “Jesus answered and said to him, 'Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?'” Jesus then goes on to say to Nicodemus in verse 11, “Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness." Jesus first brings out the point that He and the apostles have spoken to them physically and shown them with physical manifestation of miracles and healings, yet they still didn’t believe who He was.
John 14:26
26) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (NKJV)
Jesus was who He said He was— He was the Word, who through God created all things. He was the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us. He was a friend, a servant, and a teacher to all who He came in contact with. He was a healer of not just the physical body, but a healer of souls. He was and is the “light of men”. His life is the epitome of agape love— agape, a Greek word meaning, “a selfless love felt by Christians for their fellow human beings.”
If only people would see, including Christian’s today who just do not comprehend the power that is available to them, to do all that Jesus had said in His commission to His disciples in Mark 16:17-18, “17) And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18) they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
John 14:12 Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” Don’t you believe Jesus? Or do you believe some of the things He said, but not all
and get the rest of your misinformation from the religious doctrines of men? Well, Jesus didn’t say anything that wasn’t true.
If your Church is telling you that these things which Jesus spoke of are not for Christians today, it may be time for you to move on, because their unbelief will hold you back from experiencing God’s best for you. It is time for you to do just what Jesus said to Jairus in Mark 5:36, “Don’t be afraid, Just Believe!”
